What Changing Lines Mean in I Ching
Only line values 6 and 9 change; their transformation produces the resulting hexagram.
Mechanics first
The six values are recorded bottom-to-top. 6 is old yin changing to yang; 7 is young yang; 8 is young yin; 9 is old yang changing to yin. Primary and resulting hexagrams are resolved before interpretation.
Several changes are not an error
Every case from zero to six moving lines is valid. With several changes, one must not silently invent a single 'main' line: the reading school must be named—such as Zhu Xi's rules—or all moving texts should be shown transparently.
Short checklist
- • Verify the 6/7/8/9 values and bottom-to-top order.
- • Mark every 6 and 9 as moving.
- • Check which reading school selected the texts.
- • Do not confuse the cast itself with later interpretation.
