How to Ask the I Ching

The I Ching answers best not a demand to guess the future, but a question about measure, timing, and right action.

Strong question formula

A strong question contains the situation, your role, and a choice you can make without pressuring another will.

  • What is important to understand in this situation now?
  • Which step is timely?
  • Where should I wait, and where should I act?

Weak questions

A weak question demands guarantee, tries to control another person, or asks the sign to replace responsibility.

  • Will they definitely text?
  • When will I become rich?
  • Who is guilty?

One question at a time

If the question contains three themes at once, the I Ching will show fog. Separate choice, feeling, and action.

  • First clarify the situation.
  • Then ask about action.
  • After that, return to feelings and consequences.

Checklist

  • The question is written in one line.
  • It includes my role, not only someone else’s behavior.
  • I am willing to receive advice even if it differs from expectation.

Boundaries

  • Do not ask the I Ching medical, legal, or financial questions as instructions for action.
  • Do not use the answer as a weapon in conflict.

FAQ

Can I ask the same question several times?

Better not. Repetition makes sense only after a new fact, action, or meaningful change in circumstances.

Can I ask about another person?

Better translate the question into your own choice: how should I act, what should I see, where is my boundary.
