The Historia Augusta preserves a late-antique literary cluster in which rulers receive sortes/oracles containing Virgilian verses. The direct loci are catalogued, but random opening of a Virgil codex is not attested in them.
This is a case explorer, not an ancient executable algorithm: modern philology treats the episodes as artificial/fictive and specifically rejects reading the HA as evidence for random book opening.

In Roma triumphans Flavio Biondo explicitly describes an opened Virgil codex and verses encountered by chance and taken as an augury. This is Renaissance evidence, not the mechanism of the Historia Augusta.

Gruber reports a specific duʿā-i fāl-i muṣḥaf dated 723/1323: purification, al-Fātiḥa, random opening of the muṣḥaf, the first letter of the seventh line on the right page, and lookup in a red-letter table with Persian guidance.
